As the leading camera repair and servicing specialists in Sydney, we know that proper lens maintenance is crucial to taking high-quality photos. And we know that no matter how hard you try, your gear will get dirty eventually. So, here are some of our tips for ensuring your lenses and photos stay crystal clear.
Our first bit of advice is to keep your camera bag clean because dirt in the bag quickly becomes dirt on the camera. Our second bit of advice is to get a high-quality filter to protect the front element of your lens.
Now for the cleaning process itself:
- Start with an air blower to get as many dust particles off your lens as possible. This is also the method you want to use to get rid of sand grains.
- If you need to get rid of greasy smudges or fingerprints, use specialised wipes. Be sure to wipe from the centre out because otherwise, you might pick up particles trapped between the front element of the lens and the barrel, scratching the lens’s delicate surface.
- Never reuse a wipe. Even if it looks clean, it isn’t.
- As with wipes, a specialised lens-cleaning solution is best, with reagent-grade isopropyl alcohol being a suitable alternative. Just make sure to only spray it on the wipe.
Lastly, and most importantly, when it comes to lens-cleaning, there is such a thing as too much. Due to the chemicals and advanced coatings applied to them, lenses are far more vulnerable to damage than regular glass. So, limit physical contact with them, don’t overclean, and ESPECIALLY don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you think a particular lens clean is too much for you to handle, we will be happy to take it on for you.
